New housing application for Thornhill lodged

13th Jul 2009

A formal planning application has been lodged for a proposed residential development to the south of Thornhill, on a site adjacent to the Thornhill Hospital and Health Centre.

An extensive community engagement exercise has been undertaken to promote and discuss the proposals. This has included meetings with Thornhill Community Council, contact with the local MP, MSPs and local councillors, as well as a well-attended community engagement event held at the Thornhill Inn, where the feedback on the proposals from the local community was generally very positive.

As a result of feedback received from the local community, initial proposals for the site have been adjusted to reflect the need for greater flexibility in the mix of housing offered as well as a desire for more traditional design and materials.

The application has been lodged by Queensberry Properties Limited, a partnership between Cruden Homes, one of Scotland’s leading housebuilders, and Buccleuch Property, one of the country’s most established land and property experts.

The planning application is for 65 homes in Phase 1 and outline planning for the entire site, which includes an indicative masterplan of how the whole site might be developed.

The site contains the remains of a Roman Fort, which will be protected and will form an important focal point for the development.

The design takes its influence from the existing character of Thornhill, whilst taking advantage of modern energy efficient materials and construction methods.

A network of footpaths throughout the development has been integrated into the design. The paths will allow access to green community spaces and surrounding woodlands.

Some adjustments will be required to allow access from Townhead Street, and developers will work with local residents to minimise disruption.

Speaking on behalf of Queensberry Properties, Nick Waugh, Commercial Property Director for Buccleuch Property, said:

“Having consulted extensively with the local community in Thornhill, and received a lot of very positive feedback, we’re now pleased to be in a position to submit a formal planning application for this new residential development in Dumfries and Galloway.

“This development will help meet strong local demand for a mix of good quality family homes as well as helping to sustain local shops, businesses and amenities.”
